How do you know your concrete floor needs replacing?
Most concrete floors give some warning before they turn into a bigger job. Here's what we look for when a homeowner calls about a floor that isn't right.
Cracks that keep growing
A hairline crack or two is normal, but cracks that widen or lift at one edge usually mean the base moved, and water gets in and makes them worse.
Floor sinking or uneven
A low spot or a tilt you feel underfoot usually means the dirt below settled because it was never packed, and patching the top won't stop it.
Flooring lifting or smelling musty
Tile that pops, wood that cups or a musty smell often points to moisture coming up through the slab, and it'll keep ruining whatever you lay down.
Water standing on the floor
Puddles that sit after snowmelt or a wash-down mean the floor doesn't slope toward the door or drain, and standing water wears the surface down over time.
Chipping or dusty surface
A top that flakes or leaves dust on your shoes often traces back to a pour done in poor conditions, and it keeps wearing away with use.
Dirt or gravel floor
A shop, basement or addition with a dirt or gravel floor is hard to keep clean, and it can't take flooring until a proper slab goes in.
How we handle concrete floor installation
Concrete floor installation in Kalispell starts under the concrete, because a good finish on a poor base won't hold up. We dig out to firm subgrade, the soil the slab sits on, pack a gravel layer over it and cover that with heavy plastic sheeting called a vapor barrier, which keeps soil gases out of the house and keeps wet concrete from clogging the gravel. We lay that barrier with care and patch any tear before the pour, since even a small hole can let moisture up into the flooring you put on top. Then we pour, finish the floor flat and give it time to cure, the slow hardening that gives concrete its strength. The price mostly follows the floor's size, how much digging and base work your site needs and whether the slab gets steel reinforcement, while the schedule turns on the weather and any permit your address needs. Your written estimate lays out both for your floor.
A new floor often meets other work. If it changes the height at a doorway or a basement entry, we can pour concrete steps to match, and if you're adding a pool, we can plan the concrete pool deck around it while we're working out your floor.

Dates set around Kalispell weather
Kalispell winters are hard on fresh concrete, so I'd rather move a pour date than pour when conditions are wrong.

Concrete floor questions we hear
Here are the questions Kalispell homeowners ask us most about new concrete floors. If yours isn't here, call or send the form and ask about your own job.
How much does a concrete floor cost in Kalispell?
Concrete slab installation in Kalispell usually costs about $6 to $11 per square foot, and that range leaves out staining or stamping. It's what slab work commonly runs around here, not a quote from us, so your written estimate gives you the figure for your floor.
Do I need a permit to pour a concrete floor in Kalispell?
The city's permit list doesn't settle that for a concrete floor, so ask Kalispell's Building Department about your project. It reviews and inspects projects inside city limits, its list names building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical work but not concrete floors, and city Public Works can add its own permits, like a right-of-way permit, to a building permit. Outside city limits a county, another city or the state program may cover you, so before we set a date we find out which office covers your address and take care of the permits for our part when one's needed.
How long does new concrete take to cure before I can walk on it?
A new slab should be walkable within 48 hours, though concrete takes a month to fully cure. Waiting a week before heavier loads may be safer, so plan when heavy furniture or equipment goes back on the floor.
Can concrete be poured on frozen ground in Kalispell?
Not on frozen ground. One concrete trade group's cold-weather guide says the ground under new concrete must be at least 40°F, thawed with ground heaters or blankets if it isn't. Older weather records put the coldest night of a typical Kalispell winter around 20 below, so a winter floor means planning time and equipment for thawing before the pour.
What causes cracks in a new concrete floor?
Some cracking can't be prevented entirely in any concrete, but cracks in random places usually come from a base that settles or control joints cut late or skipped. Properly designed joints, shallow cuts that give the slab a planned place to crack, keep cracking under control. Ask any contractor how they'll lay the joints out, and I'll show you where ours go at the estimate.
Is it cheaper to add soil gas protection when a concrete floor goes in?
Usually, yes. Building soil gas features in during construction typically costs less than fixing the house afterward, and the sheeting under the slab is one of them. If it matters to you, bring it up at the estimate so we can plan the base around it.
